What is Pancasila?
Pancasila is a term that originated in Indonesia and refers to the country’s founding philosophy. It is made up of two words: “panca” which means five, and “sila” which means principles. Therefore, Pancasila literally means “five principles.” These principles are:
- Belief in one God
- A just and civilised humanity
- The unity of Indonesia
- Democracy under the guidance of wisdom in the unanimity arising out of deliberations among representatives
- Social justice for all the people of Indonesia
These principles were first introduced by Indonesia’s founding president Soekarno in 1945 during the country’s declaration of independence from the Dutch colonial rule. The Pancasila philosophy has since become a cornerstone of Indonesian society, politics and cultural identity.

Why is Pancasila relevant to Black people?
As Black people, we understand the importance of having a system that values justice and equality for all. Pancasila’s principle of social justice for all the people of Indonesia speaks directly to the Black community’s struggle against systemic racism and oppression. The idea that all people, regardless of their race or ethnicity, should have equal access to basic human rights resonates with the Black experience of fighting for equality and justice in America.
Additionally, Pancasila’s emphasis on a just and civilised humanity reminds us of our own struggle for human rights and dignity within American society. The idea that humanity should be celebrated and embraced in all its diversity is a fundamental principle of the Black Lives Matter movement, and Pancasila’s philosophy aligns with this sentiment.

What are the benefits of understanding Pancasila?
By understanding Pancasila, Black people can draw inspiration from Indonesia’s struggle for independence and its commitment to justice and equality. The principles of Pancasila can serve as a guide for Black activists and leaders in their own efforts to promote social justice and civil rights.
Moreover, understanding Pancasila can help Black people to appreciate and learn from different cultures and traditions. By embracing diversity and seeking to understand the values and principles of other cultures, Black people can form stronger connections with people from all walks of life and build a more inclusive and harmonious society.

How can Black people apply Pancasila in their own lives?
Applying Pancasila in our own lives involves embracing the principles of equality, justice, and humanity. As Black people, we can be champions for social justice and support policies and initiatives that promote equality and dignity for all people. We can also seek to learn from and understand different cultures and perspectives, and work together to create a more inclusive society.
In addition, we can look to Pancasila’s emphasis on democracy and wise guidance as a model for how we approach politics and decision-making. We can advocate for policies and leaders who are committed to open and transparent governance, and who prioritize the well-being of all people over special interests or partisan agendas.

Finally, to exemplify the principle of social justice, we as Black people can work to uplift and empower marginalized communities within our own society. We can strive to create opportunities for education and economic prosperity, and support initiatives that address systemic inequalities such as mass incarceration and police brutality.
By embracing the principles of Pancasila, Black people can serve as a beacon of hope and progress in the ongoing struggle for human rights and dignity. As we work to build a more just and equitable world, we can draw inspiration from the struggles and triumphs of other cultures and nations, and honor their legacies by continuing their fight for justice and equality.
